Intestinal Health?

On Saturday, I spent 3 hours with a nutritionist. We went over my history including all my medications I have taken.  She determined I most likely have a very bad intestinal disorder. We believe this is the result of all the antibiotics, prednisone, and other medications that I was on from 2007 through 2011. It is also exacerbated by the continual use of a nose spray steroid nose straight for my sinus issues.

As a result, she has put me on a few nutritional supplements which should help restore the bacteria in the intestine and on a very strict diet.  Now I do not want this to sound like I have to count calories and watch what I eat.  To the contrary, I have specific food groups, some to eat unlimited amounts and some to limit the daily intake.  Today was the first day and I had a hard time eating as mush of each food group she suggested.  Basically it is my old farm meals.  No pasta, no cheese or milk.  I will also monitor my fatigue levels, my chest congestion, my sleep, my hunger periods and other data not related to food consumption logging.

From all the subsequent reading, this seems to make sense, as I would eat so much food and seem to get minimal nutritional value.  I read if the intestine was not functioning correctly, the body is unable to absorb the proper vitamins and nutrients.  In addition, it will not produce nutrients necessary to make one feel good.

Another symptom, which only makes me believe this is an actual issue, is that if you eat and the food is not being processed, the number of bowel movements is increased. It has not been uncommon for me to 4 or more bowel movements daily.  That would make sense if the food is basically just flowing through and not digesting properly or given me the appropriate nutrient content. This could explain why I am so fatigued, always hungry and gaining weight.

She said the bacteria in my GI tract are one of the most overlooked and vaguely understood components of both weight loss and longevity. There is a host of weight and health related problems that come from imbalances or problems with your intestinal flora.   She asked the following and I said YES many times.

  1.

Do you get a stomach bloat after eating carbs?

  2. Is your fat consumptions relatively low but you still have a protruding stomach?

  3. Do you not seem to recover well after exercise?

Below is a great handout to graphically show what I believe is the issue.

What I learned is first the term gut flora refers to the delicate balance of microbes and other 'germs,' both good and bad, that live in the human gut (the stomach, small and large intestines and colon). The gut flora balance is the perfect scientific example of a communal relationship—an otherwise symbiotic relationship where only one side benefits (in this case, the human).

There are billions of gut flora bacterial cells in the human body, compromising over 400 different strains. In fact, the bacteria in your stomach can comprise up to 22lbs of your total body weight!

Though many of types of bacteria living in our stomach have been identified, there are still several types of gut flora that have yet to be explored, mainly because many are resistant to the latest culturing techniques, making them nearly impossible to study.

The problem is that many types of intestinal flora can't survive outside of the warm, incubating human body and therefore can't be studied alive.

I asked what does the flora in our stomach and intestines do and how does what they do relate to losing weight and being lean and fit? The explanation I found was:  “Many of the flora in our gut work symbiotically within the human body. A partial list of the physiological processes that are influenced by our composition of intestinal bacteria would include our immune system, digesting carbohydrates, preventing irritable bowels, maximizing the absorption of nutrients, energy production and more.

For the purposes of weight loss and fitness we must consider that proper nutrition is essential to be lean and fit. Our intestinal flora has a very large influence over the assimilation and absorption of what we eat. Conversely, an equally important consideration that is usually overlooked is that what we eat can influence our composition of intestinal flora.

One example is the excess consumption of sugar. Certain types of flora that live within our gut thrive on a high sugar diet, most notably Candida Albicans. If you get a bloat in your lower tummy after eating sugar, this is a good indication of a Candida bloom. These flora produce what are known as endotoxins. Endotoxins are poisonous substances that live within the bacteria themselves. When these bacteria die, the poisons within them flood into your body causing an immune response. If you have ever consumed sugar and felt nauseated, the endotoxins released into your system from bad gut flora are the culprit. This is just one example illustrating that if you want to lose weight and be fit and lean for life, you can't ignore the influence wielded by the little bugs living in your gut.”

The main point being if she is correct, it is time to recover from the issues of long-term prescription antibiotics and steroids.  She said this may be a six month process and to be patient.  I will as I have been searching for years now and the physician just gave me antibiotics, steroids with a good dose of allergy medicine.  The way things have been, this may be the answer or may not.  I only know for the first time in years, it makes sense.

Baby Beluga sighting in Apple Valley!

Well, I did it!  For the past 2 years I have basically run Grandma's Marathon and that is the only running but I have completed. No training other than walking and biking.  Yesterday, I went out for a run. It was 3 miles of pure hell!  I ran over a 13 min. mile.  I have had so much mucus lately and my chest was so congested.  I was breathing so hard and hacking, it was just a shame.  If anyone heard me they may have called 911.

I felt like the picture below.

I am going to do this again.  I will because I believe it is the best way to get into shape again.   I have registered for Grandma's Marathon is year once again. If I am able to run Grandmas and finish, this will be the 29th consecutive year I have done so. I am really not looking forward to doing that race again. Still a good race, although I am just tired of going up there and running the race. It has lost all its luster and is no longer any fun. I drive up the night before, sleeping my car, from the face, and then come home.

I also am going to a nutritionist to sort through why even though I have monitored every little crumb I ate and assured I was at 1,800-2,200 Calories, nutritionally sound and exercised at least 500 Calories a day, I gained weight.  I read there may be an issue with the long term Prednisone and antibiotic use.  I had read that could create a digestive imbalance and goof up the metabolism.  The only thing that seems to make sense.

For 2013 I have decided to try once again to make my goal of commuting at least 3000 miles to and from work on the bicycle. It depends on which way I try to work, it is anywhere between 17.3 and 20.4 miles. Sometimes, when the wind is really strong from the south, the 20.4 miles ride is much easier.   17.3 miles is everything on main roads and not as safe.  The best ride for ease and safety when the wind is low is 17.8 miles.  So I need to rider 85-88 days.   Unlike last year when it was 70° on St. Patrick's Day, here we are in April and we had snow on Friday. I am really not going to get much of a jump on my goal for this year like I did last year. However, last year I missed the goal by 4 commutes. That was really kind of disheartening. Oh well it happened!

My girlfriend and I decided in early May we're going to take a trip to Colorado. She will fly back after spending 3. I will spend an additional 6 days helping my son cleanup and build a desk.  My son is going to take a trip to Europe after school is out and then come back to a nice job for the summer. This will be the best time for me to spend some time with him before he goes and has a busy summer. While I am there, we're going to look at new road bikes that I may get him so he has a better opportunity to ride to work, if he should choose. Right now, he uses my 1985 Cannondale SR 400 bicycle which is in good shape, but is not going to be safe and dependable as a new road bike.

Shelley picked up a new bike.  It is so nice!   It is a women's Felt ZW4.  Shimano 105 components  I am looking forward to some 60 miles rides this summer.  She will do that without difficulty on this bike.  It just glides and shifting is smooth.

It has been 15 months now sine I quit all tennis officiating.   It is something I miss occasionally, but overall, I don't miss the politics of sports officiating. It is really hard to do sports officiating when at times, the politics and the favoritism of certain people comes into play. I think that officiating is becoming a lost sport where you can depend on doing the right thing and not be ridiculed constantly for it.

I am not sure I will ever do sports officiating again. I have been asked several times to come back to tennis and other sports, but it's just not in me anymore. I did sports officiating because it made me feel good about what I was doing and I enjoyed it. That went away, again, mostly because of the politics of a few people who think that they are above the rules. In one way, sports officiating is losing out on someone who had a great deal passion for it, but the ultra running world is picking up somebody who enjoys volunteering and helping out at these wonderful races.

As mentioned above I am seeing my sports nutritionist next week Saturday. I will see the person for return visits for about 3 months. Is she can't get me back on track, then I don't think anybody else can.   I am not passed my peak ever wait, but I have gained 82 pounds since my lowest weight in 2006 when I completed the superior hiking Trail 50 mile race. Ideally, I would like to lose about 60 pounds. I think it would make me feel so much better and be happier. We can only wait and see what comes out of it.

As I close, Shelley is heart broke.  Her fifth love of her life tore his ACL.  Surgery is needed.  No it is not me as I know I am only 4th in her love hierarchy.  I understand her girls are one and two.  Her parents three and four  Jackson, he post-divorce male in her heart, has a torn ACL.  It is a very expensive fix but I know Jackson is her third love.  She has known Jackson longer than she has known me.  I am her forth love and am very happy about that position!

Wish me well!
